Flowers grace various aspects of our lives, serving as a testament to the improved quality of life. Caring for these delicate blossoms becomes crucial once they are in our possession.
Whether purchased from a florist or brought home, the first step is swift removal from packaging. Keep them away from high temperatures and intense light, opting for a well-ventilated, excellent space.
Environment
Avoid placing them near air conditioning units or electric fans. Consider temperature preferences—common flowers thrive around 5 degrees, while tropical flowers prefer 10-12 degrees.
Promptly discard any yellowed or rotting petals upon acquiring the flowers. Rotting petals can infect healthy ones, hastening the flowers' decline and detracting from their overall beauty.
Water Quantity
The general rule is to fill one-third of the vase with water. For flowers with deeper roots, you can increase it to two-thirds. Monitor water levels, mainly if the branches absorb water rapidly.
Besides regular watering, use a spray bottle to increase air humidity and slow wilting during hot summers.
Different flowers have distinct water needs. Herbaceous flowers like eustoma and carnations prefer shallow water, while bulbous flowers thrive in deeper water, like tulips.
To prolong the duration of blossoming, incorporate a freshness preservative into the water. Craft a straightforward solution by blending 1% salt and sugar into the water.
Changing Water
Frequent water changes are vital to maintaining flower freshness. Always use warm, clean water (37°C-44°C) as flowers absorb it better in this range. Trim any foliage below the water level to prevent deterioration.
In warmer seasons, change the water daily; in winter, do it every two days. Cut the stems diagonally to enhance water absorption. Wash the roots during water changes, trimming any signs of rot.
Pruning
When pruning, leave 2-3 leaves below the buds and remove excess leaves, rhizomes, and thorns gently. This aids in photosynthesis without causing harm. Trim the flower pole and root diagonally to facilitate water absorption.
Cut flowers underwater to avoid air bubbles hindering water absorption. Each cut allows water to rise 0.6 mm in the branch ducts.
Cleaning
Rinse the flower roots to remove bacteria accumulated during transportation. Sticky and slippery flower stems signal bacterial reproduction; clean these areas during water changes. Use a clean glass vase, not metal, and disinfect the water and tools with a few drops of 84 disinfectant.
Auxiliary Tools
In professional preservation, contemplate using water, fungicides, antimicrobials, and sugar. Colourless carbonated beverages, like Sprite, offer nutrients and inhibit bacteria, enhancing flower preservation.
Following these simple steps, you can ensure your flowers remain vibrant and beautiful, adding a touch of nature to your surroundings.
