Spring arrives in April with ideal temperatures for planting morning glories and waiting for their beautiful summer and fall blooms.

If you want your flower seeds to germinate faster, consider making a small slit at the end of the seed without a dent or soaking it in water before sowing.

Both methods encourage the seeds to absorb water and germinate. When sowing morning glories, opt for a pot with a diameter of about 10 centimeters or a seedling tray. Since the germination rate isn't very high, it's okay to sow a few extra seeds.

After sowing the seeds, ensure they receive ample water. Maintain soil moisture by using a spray bottle. You can also cover the seeds with a piece of paper to help maintain moisture.

Typically, morning glory seeds will germinate in around 10 days, and cotyledons will appear in another 10 days.

1. Light

Morning glories thrive in full sunlight, which ensures they can undergo proper photosynthesis and grow well. They can tolerate some shade, but avoid complete darkness.

2. Transplanting

When the seedlings have five or six leaves, it's time to transfer them to individual pots. morning glories have relatively deep roots, so it's best to transplant them when they are still young. Evening is the best time for transplantation. Handle with care to prevent any harm to the roots.

After transplanting, water moderately and let the seedlings bask in the sun the following day. morning glories require warmth for their roots to develop, so using a black pot is better than a red one.

As they grow, provide a trellis for the vines to climb and create a stunning wall of flowers when they bloom.

3. Soil

Select the right soil for your morning glory seedlings before transferring them to pots. morning glories prefer rich, loose, and well-aerated soil. A mixture of garden soil, peat soil, perlite, and coarse sand is ideal.

You can use a combination of 4 parts leaf litter, 5 parts garden soil, and 1 part river sand. Add a small amount of bone meal at the bottom of the pot as fertilizer.

4. Moisture

Morning glories can tolerate both moisture and drought, but avoid water stagnation in the pots. Generally, water every other day, and in the summer, water more frequently to maintain a consistently moist but not waterlogged soil environment.

5. Fertilization

Water-based fertilizers are preferable, with a frequency of every 10 days. Be cautious not to overuse nitrogen-based fertilizers, as excessive growth of stems and leaves can hinder flower enjoyment.

Other Precautions

Morning glories exhibit a twisting growth pattern, so construct the growth frame to match their right-to-left winding characteristic. When the seedlings develop 3-5 true leaves, the central vine should be removed to encourage lateral vine growth.

Vines will also sprout between the leaf axils during this process. Carefully protect the leaves during the centering process. The key to a flourishing wall of morning glory flowers is to continually pinch and center.

After each centering, remember to fertilize, avoiding contact with the foliage.
